DVD Afternoon Podcast #89: Best Films Of 2011 (And More!)

I don't know what excited me more about recording this gargantuan year-in-review edition of DVD Afternoon: finding out which movies Heather Noel put on her best-of-2011 list, or trying out the fancy new microphone I got for Christmas.

Okay, it was probably finding out what was on Heather's list—which was assembled with all the care and intelligence that I've come to expect from her. Me, on the other hand? I'm the buffoon who thought Sucker Punch was one of the year's most notable filmmaking achievements. Anyhow, the sad spectacle of me trying to defend my choice (and failing to convince Heather) is just one of the many pleasures to be found in this jumbo-sized episode: in addition to our lists of the year's best films, we also select our most pleasant DVD discoveries of 2011, identify the year's most underrated and overrated movies, and name the film we each thought was just the flat-out worst thing we saw over the last 12 months. (And the new microphone makes the whole discussion sound absolutely terrific!)

Here's how the show breaks down:

0:00 — Intro/Top five DVD Discoveries of 2011
24:37 — John Prine, "All The Best"
25:42 — Best films of 2011 (#6-#10)
1:03:45 — The Exciters, "Reaching For The Best"
1:04:53 — Most underrated and overrated films of 2011/Worst film of 2011/Best films of 2011 (#1-#5)/Outro
